A study in weird mobile-phone habits
I consider myself as an average user of technology and mobile phones in the 21st century. I have a laptop, I use the internet several times a day, I have a Facebook profile and even one on Myspace. But now that I have studied the bar manager at my work’s use of his mobile phone I am not so sure anymore what the definition of average is.
The scene: ten bartenders are attending a course/lecture in beer. Two experts on beer present as lecturers.
Time: a regular Monday evening from 8 PM till 10 PM. People are ready with their notebooks and pen and paper to get the best out of this course. No mobile telephones in sight.
The course begins. My barmanager sits in the corner left to me.
- A baby giggles –
Bar-manager looks at his phone. He texts something on his phone.
- A baby giggles –

This pattern precedes in a while.
Beers are beeing tasted, the two experts share their knowledge about beers with us.
- Ring ring –
The voice of bar-manager, loud and clear: “I’m in a meeting. No, it’s okay”. He talks for a while.
- Ring ring –
The voice of bar-manager: “I’m still in a meeting”. Bar-manager laughs at something.
Beers are beeing tasted, and the two experts pour out of their knowledge. Meanwhile, the pattern of the baby giggling and the phone ringing continues till the end of this evening-course.
I always turn off my phone at meetings or at least have it on silent in my bag. But maybe it is me who has weird mobile-phone habits.
