Anette Damgaard Nielsen

A curious Dane from the country:

24-year old girl from Lolland but now living in Silkeborg. Have lived in Jutlund for 2½ years where I have spend the most of my time at Århus University. I've been studied 'Nordisk sprog og litteratur' for 4 semesters, and last summer I started my supplementary subject called Visual Culture, which have a more specific focus on my future plans, as I would like to work at an advertising agency.

I love to work with the picture, no matter if it's a renaissance painting or a typical advertising from today’s magazines, it just fascinate me to see through the sender. This communication between me, as the observer, and the picture or the screen has made a natural link to this optional subject 'Interface'.

Connor
I was sitting in the train on my way from the central station in Copenhagen to the station in Valby. It was Friday afternoon around 5 p.m., and everyone was on their way to the weekend. Suddenly a girl (we name her X) breaks the private silence, and invites us all into her future evening. She was together with a girlfriend, and X was loutly telling her, that she had nothing to do, and she just wanted to party this evening. She picks up her cellphone and calls a friend. This conversation is the start to this connor….
X changes her look, as she gets her friend (Y) on the phone. You can see, that shes' seeing him in front of her. They are talking about their plans for this Friday evening. He's at a party, and the music explodes through the phone. X is sitting at her seat moving along to the music. Her eyes are closed, and you can almost feel how badly, she wants to be at this party. Y gives his phone to another friend, who can't hear, who he's talking to, so X must leave her trance. She opens her eyes, stares wildly, and starts shouting, who she is. She gets more and more upset, because this new boy can't hear her name and continues this shouting, which is getting louter and louter. Everyone around her is looking at her, some shushs by her, but X doesn't hear them. She's in this world between him(M) and her. She's not in the same world as us. You can almost feel her frustration, why this new boy, M, can't hear her. In the end M gets tired of this conversation and gives the phone back to it's owner. Y is again on the phone. They are at party by Sara.. SARA, X shouts, hell no, I don't want to go to Sara's party. I hate her.. X changes position all the time, although the train is filled, and a lot of the crowd is standing up. X doesn't notice, that she takes up a lot of the small room.. And the seat, which purpose is to make 3 person comfortable, is booked by X and a lady, who has moved to the window. X breaks the conversation, maybe she will come to Sara's party. She returns to the reality, and starts talking to her girlfriend - at a normal level- about what to do. X has allready got 10 beers, so if her girlfriend wants to be with her, she must hurry finishing her beer.
Everyone around X is staring at her. We, the passengers, were also placed in a world between X and Y (/M) for some few minutes. It was not the same world as X and Y, but we were also moved into a mediaworld. Now we are back in the real world together with X. We are everyone in the same world/room again. You can almost see, that people must blink with their eyes to come back to themselves, but they are here.
The train stops, and we are at the station in Valby…

Picture
This picture was taken in January, as my brother should play the first game for the national team at his age. It's only showing a line of boys, who's standing in the same direction in a sports centre. You can see two teams and some blue men, the referees. Each team is looking at their national flag, and so are the referees. The colours are a bit boring and maybe the picture is also?? For me this picture tells everything about me and my family. I'm born with a handball in my hand. My mother was pregnant with me, but was playing until she was in the 6. month (- and yes, she knew, she was pregnant..). I was only 14 days old, as I was to my first traning.
Today my three brothers play a the highest level and my father is a referee. My mother and I are only sitting at the bench, because we can't play this game anymore. The game is rough, and we have both got the diagnose: don't go on the field anymore, but then it's wonderful to follow my brothers and father. This picture tells, what we always have aimed at and what the motto is in my family: 'To the best..'
